The Ursulines at Holy Rosary wore the full habit. I asked my mom why Sister Mary Diane wore a black veil. She thought about this for a moment, took a long pull from her cigarette, exhaled through her nose and said,
“Ah, bien, that’s because she has eyes in back of her head,
toi!” That night I dreamt I snuck up behind Sister Mary Diane and whipped off her headdress. To my horror she had eyes like a one-armed bandit and glared at me, multiple cherries and lemons and grapes spinning around in righteous indignation. I hadn’t gambled on that.
