Land of the Fat Free

On our big road trip down through the States, we decided, as a respite from the restaurant chains, to purchase some real groceries for a picnic. And so I found myself stuck in a small-town supermarket somewhere in Pennsylvania looking for yoghurt, found myself staring at a wide wall stacked high with the stuff, but not one that I’d buy, because it would seem that Americans consider yoghurt a diet food and take out the fat.
Attention Americans: It’s all that sugar that’s making you fat, not the fat! And yoghurt without fat isn’t yoghurt, it’s jello—opaque, bacteria-flavoured jello!

  3. Here we set our Yoghurt on a daily basis and hardly any one buys the stuff from the supermarkets!! You can regulate the fat and the sugar as you like and it is yummy with the natural bacteria culture. But I still like the sugar free fruity yoghurt!!

  7. "...opaque, bacteria-flavoured jello!" That is the very best description of most grocers yogurt I have ever read! The Yoplait brand is full of sugar and additives (yuck) but we do have a couple nice Yoghurt brands that have no added sugar and are cultured in the cup. I use plain Mountain High low fat instead of sour cream or mayo all the time and of course with fresh berries too!

  8. There is a joke about our politicians about how they would go and demand for fat when they see fat free !! :D

  9. I so agree. We make our yoghurt at home - it's an Indian thing to do. And fresh yoghurt is so yummy. Nice one for the prompt.
