In those heady, Happiness is days, Charles M. Schulz was at the top of his game. Peanuts was everywhere, his characters on everything. Good grief, Snoopy had even gone to the moon!
I wrote a letter to him on my Charlie Brown stationery. I told him we shared a last name, except that my family spelled it with an “e” on the end. I told him there was a little red-haired girl in my class who said I reminded her of Schroeder, but that I was too shy to tell her how much I liked her.
Actually, she was blonde.

ReplyDeleteGreat G post. I an over the hill girl but I always identified with Charlie Brown except my crushes were on red headed boys. Carver, ABC Wednesday Team
ReplyDeleteLoved Peanuts and the simple everyday frustrations of life. Good Grief, this is a great post.
ReplyDeleteI love Peanuts too :)
ReplyDeleteI also love peanuts.

@Meryl: Schulz apparently was very good about responding to fan mail. I didn't get a personal response, but he did send me a picture—not an original, alas—that I still have.
ReplyDeleteI remember writing to the Beatles! lol! Youth eh? Such fun!

Love Peanuts. Sweet, sweet take on the theme!!
ReplyDeleteG is for...
Brings back memories as 'good grief' was something we'd quip as kids-quoting the great CB, of course!
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of the ABC Weds team, thank you for such an educational and entertaining post!

Good grief sound a lot better than OMG to me! Love the characters Schulz created, because they are so close to real life:):)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jeannette (above) about preferring the expression "good grief" over OMG! I always enjoyed Peanuts cartoons and looked forward to the coloured ones in the Saturday/Sunday papers. How lucky you are to have received a picture, even if not the original.

Still love peanuts.
ReplyDeleteGreat take on the theme. I enjoyed the story too. :)
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking of him the other day and his quote"Happiness is a warm puppy" It's a cliche now, but if you tried to define happiness (and I was thinking about next week's ABC,) what a brilliant definition it is. Most people can actually identify with it. Amazing talent with words.
ReplyDeleteP.S.I agree with the others about OMG
I wrote to Charles Shulz when I was about 8 asking for an original drawing from him. His office did send me back a autographed xerox of the usual gang. I kept it in my bottom drawer for years and when I was 18, my mum, deciding that I had moved away and didn't want my bottom drawer stuff any longer threw it out. Good Grief!
ReplyDeleteThis little story will never get old! Love always, the little blonde girl (BZ)
