Second Sleep

There are mornings I wonder if I will ever again get a good night’s sleep or, for that matter, if I even need one at all. It seems what my body most cares about is that last precious hour, the hour after Mary’s clock radio goes off, and I get the bed to myself. Even after a decent rest, I still relish the chance to relax that little bit longer, through the local news, while the rest of the household clanks through the morning routine, and with a little luck, fall right back to sleep and wake up to silence.

It may run contrary to the entrepreneurial spirit, but surely sleep is one of the sweetest perks of working at home. You may work more nights than you’d like, but rather than propping yourself up in your cubicle the next day, there’s nothing to keep you from an afternoon nap, or a little siesta after a heavy lunch, or the best sleep of all which I call my second sleep, on those mornings when you should’ve slept in but you couldn’t, and you try for a while to get on with the day, give up, and go back to bed.

  1. I bet most "entrepreneurs" know about that 2nd sleep. It is a delicious perk and I suspect its much healthier than staggering through a day pretending you don't need a nap. It almost makes me feel sorry for those people who work 9 to 5 and get regular paychecks.... its sad. The "employed" should be able to take naps too. But would that lead to chaos? A total melt down of the system - lunch hours would vary, the trafic would be a mess (like it is on the weekend) - no one would know when rush hour was... how would we know when to avoid the Gardner? That was a bad idea... never mind - I'm going back to bed.

  2. They used to nap in Italy, but I hear they are doing away with that tradition in favour of productivity.

  3. I can never go back to sleep after the wife's 5:10 alarm, though I don't need to be up until 6.

  5. I, too, work at home now and can sleep as late as I want if I don't have anything pressing. My work day starts around 3pm and ends around 7pm, so if I want, I can go out for coffee or lunch and get all my personal business taken care of. I do enjoy that morning silence!

  6. Every morning when I wake up, I ask myself a question... "Roll out, or roll over"?? Tha't what I love about being retired. I got up so early for so many years I thought I was a "Morning" person...found out I'm not..just had to do it.

    Second Sleep.... I like that!

  7. lucky...as a single mom, sleep has become like an estranged lover - I long for the sweet caress, wondering if it's anything like I remember!

  8. That's what I appreciate since I am retired. But now I could sleep until noon, I am fresh like a rose at 6 am !! It's a shame, but I feel good !
