Yes, the story correctly posits that, given three servings of porridge at the same initial temperature, those portions, being of various size, will indeed cool at different rates. And yes, after an allotted time, the largest might still be too hot; but if the medium bowl is now too cold, the smallest couldn’t possibly be just right, because that would violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics.
And I really don’t think children should be reading stuff like that.

Oddly enough, I HAD thought of this. The mama's bowl should be just right, and the baby's too cold. Or both parents' too hot, and the baby's just right.

ReplyDeleteI always remember a scene on "The Simpsons" where they spoofed this. Bart was making his way through the bowls, and when he came to the last one, you think he'll take it, but hi simply poured the cold one into the hot one :D

ReplyDeleteThis pre-supposes that they were all served at the same time into bowls of the same temperature. What actually happened was that Mother Bear served hers first into the coolest bowl on the top of the pile. When she saw it she realised that it still too thin for Father Bear (a notoriously fussy eater) so she left his and baby bear's to cook for longer before serving them out into the warmer bowls...

Momma bears was near the window to cool faster. poppa bear's stayed on the heat because he liked it hot and baby bear's was on the table to remain not too hot/cold. Not too hard to imagine - or so I thought...
