“And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called He Seas: and God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:10)
It was. Then along came clammy bathing suits. Cystic fibrosis. Darwin, voyaging on the Beagle. Humid air, leading to remarks like, “It’s 27, feels like 34.”
“No,” God wanted to cry, “27 in Toronto feels like exactly this. Whatever happened to ‘In the beginning was the Word’? And Jesus, people, your punctuation…” He was beginning to wish instead of an olive branch, He’d given that damned dove a copy of Eats, Shoots & Leaves.
