As it was, the open bar had probably been a bad idea from the start, especially considering the recent decline in sales and the attitude of anyone who’d even venture downtown after the company had so happily surrendered itself to the suburbs . . . but no one could’ve foreseen the subway crash.
And although everyone we knew made it through safely, some told of death leaving the station even as they ran to catch it, the misfortune dogging them still, passing slowly through the crowd, the fire, the fatalities, and another round on the company tab . . . a toast to our own mortality.
